September is Baby Safety Month, a special reminder for all of us who care for little ones that safety starts with simple, everyday choices. As parents and caregivers, we know how quickly babies grow, explore, and find new ways to surprise us—sometimes in places we least expect. That’s why taking a few proactive steps, from safe sleep habits to accident prevention, can make such a difference in keeping them protected.
At ROTH ID TAG, we share the same commitment you do: creating safe spaces for children to thrive. This month, we’re highlighting five practical safety tips to support you in every stage of your parenting journey.
1. Promote a Safe Sleep Environment
One of the most important ways to keep your baby safe is by creating a healthy sleep space. Always place your baby on their back for every sleep—both naps and overnight—as this simple step greatly reduces the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). Be sure to use a firm, safety-approved crib or bassinet, and keep it free of soft bedding, pillows, bumper pads, and stuffed animals. While it’s best to share the same room as your baby during the first months, experts recommend avoiding bed-sharing to ensure the safest sleep environment possible.
This guidance follows the Safe to Sleep® campaign (formerly “Back to Sleep”), which has helped lower SIDS rates dramatically since its launch. By sticking to these proven practices, you’re giving your baby a safe and restful start in life.
2. Ensure Proper Car Seat Installation
Car seats are one of the most important tools we have to protect babies on the road, but only when they’re used and installed correctly. Take time to double-check your car seat’s installation each time you use it, even for short trips. An improperly installed seat can’t provide the protection your little one needs in the event of an accident.
For infants, always use a rear-facing car seat for as long as the manufacturer allows, since this position offers the best protection for their head, neck, and spine. And remember—the safest place for any car seat is in the back seat, never the front.
By making car seat safety a non-negotiable habit, you can rest easier knowing your baby is protected every mile of the journey. The Baby Safety Foundation has compiled a list of car seat resources to ensure your baby is safe in their seat!
3. Babyproof Your Home and Prevent Falls
As babies grow and begin exploring, their curiosity often leads them into unexpected places. Taking a few simple steps to babyproof your home can prevent serious accidents before they happen. Start by anchoring heavy furniture and TVs securely to the wall to reduce the risk of dangerous tip-overs. If you have stairs, install sturdy safety gates at both the top and bottom to create a secure boundary.
It’s also important to cover electrical outlets, secure blind and curtain cords, and keep furniture away from windows to help prevent falls and strangulation hazards. By making these adjustments early, you’ll create a safer environment where your little one can crawl, play, and explore with fewer risks—giving you peace of mind as they discover the world around them.

4. Prevent Choking, Burns, and Water Risks
Little ones are naturally curious, which means safety around food, water, and household items requires extra attention.
Bath Safety: Bath time should always be a safe and relaxing experience, but there are several risks that can happen while in the tub. Stay within arm’s reach and use a non-slip infant tub for added security. Keep the water comfortably warm—not hot—by testing it with your wrist or using a bath thermometer. To prevent scalds, set your home’s water heater to about 120 °F.
Choking Hazards: Mealtime can be fun, but it also comes with choking hazard risks. Keep small objects like coins, batteries, and tiny toys well out of reach, and avoid offering high-risk foods such as whole grapes, raw carrots, hot dogs, popcorn, or nuts. Instead, choose safe alternatives like soft banana slices, cooked vegetables, or small cereal O’s that are easier for little mouths to manage.
Water Risks: Water play is exciting for babies, but it requires close supervision to prevent dangerous behaviour. Even a few inches of water can be dangerous. Never leave standing water in tubs, buckets, or sinks unattended, and always supervise closely during bath time.
A few proactive steps in these areas can go a long way in protecting your baby as they grow and explore.
5. Use Environmental Barriers and Close Supervision
When it comes to keeping babies safe, nothing replaces a watchful eye. Close supervision is especially important in unfamiliar environments or near potential hazards like water. Pairing your attention with smart childproofing measures creates the strongest protection for your little one.
Childproofing Basics: Simple tools can make a big difference in preventing injuries. Cabinet locks, outlet covers, corner guards, safety latches, and cord organizers all help keep curious hands away from danger. Removing small objects that pose choking risks is another essential step.
By combining these environmental barriers with your presence and attention, you create a layered approach to safety that allows your baby to explore, learn, and grow in a protected space.
Keep Safety at the Heart of Every Day
Baby Safety Month is the perfect reminder that a few thoughtful, proactive steps can make a big difference in protecting your little one. From creating a safe sleep space and ensuring proper car seat use, to babyproofing your home, preventing choking and burn hazards, and combining supervision with environmental safeguards, each measure adds an important layer of protection.

The ROTH ID TAG was created after tragedy struck our own family.
On December 23, 2022, Julie Roth, beloved wife and mother, was traveling with her two small children when they were caught up in a 47+ vehicle pile-up on the Ohio Turnpike. Julie and Edna Rose, the baby she was carrying, did not survive, but her two other children did.
Injured and afraid, Julie’s two toddlers waited many hours to see a familiar face while emergency responders worked to identify them and contact their father, who was at work. Thankfully, Ayla and Rory Roth are alive and well today. They are the true reason for the ROTH ID TAG creation.
